Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the idea of optimizing your art website for search engines?
You’re not alone.
In a recent meeting with the pilot artists, I learned that many artists don’t fully understand that SEO is simply another way to drive traffic to their websites—much like social media or paid ads, but in an organic way.
Organic traffic simply means your website is well-known, well-liked, and well-constructed.
This disconnect often stems from how other SEO specialists present the topic, using overly complex terms without relating it to familiar systems. Honestly, it took me a lot longer to understand SEO myself because of this.
That’s why, in Module 2 of the Artist's Launch Academy, I introduce SEO using a relatable librarian analogy.
Imagine search engines as librarians: when you create a well-written book with a great cover, clear chapters, and valuable content, librarians want to showcase it in as many libraries as possible. Similarly, SEO helps ensure your "book" (website) is not only accessible but also referenced by other credible sources.
By building foundational SEO knowledge, this module empowers artists to take control of their online presence, making SEO approachable and actionable.

Pilot Artists: A Data-Driven Journey to Mastering SEO for Artists
The pilot phase is the first round of artists to go through the academy, designed to test its effectiveness and ensure it’s built by artists, for artists.

This data-driven approach sets the academy on a solid foundation by incorporating feedback and real-world results into its design, ensuring it meets the unique needs of the art community.
During this phase, 8 artists from diverse backgrounds shared their experiences with SEO, providing valuable insights.

They participated in pre- and post-module surveys to evaluate their confidence in topics like ranking factors, keyword placement, and social signals. The results were both revealing and inspiring.
On average, participants improved their confidence by 1.85 points.
Certain topics, such as understanding ranking factors and keyword placement, saw improvements exceeding a 2-point jump. However, areas like understanding user intent, site speed, and leveraging social signals still highlighted opportunities for further development—underscoring the importance of continuously refining the program.
Key Lessons from the Pilot Data
Artists showed the highest confidence growth in:
Keyword Research: Helping artists identify art keywords that attract traffic.
Backlink Building: Strategies for securing links from other sites to improve art exposure.
Mobile Responsiveness: Optimizing art websites to sell your art effectively across devices.
Meanwhile, areas like site speed and social signals still pose challenges. This is why your feedback is vital—I’m using every insight to create a course that works for you.
These insights are actively shaping the public version of the academy. If you’re curious about how this data-driven journey unfolds, you can dive deeper into our meeting highlights for Module 1 or explore the comprehensive research underpinning this academy’s development.
Meeting Insights and Action Steps
During our recent meeting with the pilot artists, we celebrated successes and pinpointed areas to improve.
Here’s what we discussed:
Slides for Reference: Artists requested access to lecture slides for continued learning. To support their independent study, I plan to package all the lecture slides into a comprehensive zip file. This will allow artists to revisit key points about seo for artists and reinforce their learning on their own time.
Workbooks Revisions: Adjustments are underway to simplify prompts and align directories with Module 3. Specifically, the directories section will now be incorporated into the research component of Module 3 to create a more cohesive learning experience. Feedback indicated that this placement would better support the flow of content and understanding.
Engaging Scenarios: The scenarios in Module 3 received glowing feedback, showing how practical exercises help concepts stick. Artists found these scenarios both engaging and effective in making complex ideas like art keywords more tangible. This reinforces the value of scenario-based learning and ensures future modules will continue this approach.
Lecture Style for Module 3: We also discussed and finalized the lecture format for Module 3. For the pilot program, I’m conducting two live, two-hour sessions per week for each part of the module. This format allows for real-time Q&A and provides space to address any uncertainties as they arise. However, for the public version, these will transition into pre-recorded video lectures supplemented by community discussion forums to ensure accessibility and scalability.
For the pilot program, I’m hosting live Q&A sessions to ensure every question is addressed. For the public version, these will transition into pre-recorded modules supplemented with active community forums.
Understanding On-Page, Technical, and Off-Page SEO
Let's talk about what Module 2 is actually about! SEO (Search Engine Optimization) works like creating a well-organized and referenced book that librarians (search engines) will recommend.
Here’s how the different aspects of SEO come together:
On-Page SEO: Crafting Your Book's Content
On-page SEO is all about what’s inside your book—the chapters, the cover, and the words you’ve carefully written.
In the context of a website, it includes:
Keywords: Strategically using terms your audience searches for, such as "abstract paintings for sale."
Meta Titles and Descriptions: Writing compelling summaries that entice readers to open your book (click your site).
Internal Linking: Connecting pages within your website, like cross-references in a book, guiding readers (and search engines) to important chapters.
High-Quality Content: Ensuring your website’s text, images, and videos are relevant and engaging, building trust with visitors and search engines.
Think of it as crafting a book that’s easy to read and rich with valuable information that readers will love.
Technical SEO: Building the Book’s Structure
If on-page SEO is the content, technical SEO is the spine and binding of the book that ensures it’s sturdy and easy to handle.
This includes:
Site Speed: Ensuring pages load quickly, keeping visitors from getting frustrated.
Mobile-Friendliness: Making sure your website looks great and functions well on phones and tablets.
Secure Connections (HTTPS): Providing a safe browsing experience with encrypted connections.
Clean URLs: Creating simple, descriptive web addresses that make navigation intuitive.
This ensures that search engines can easily “pick up” and understand your website, just like a librarian who quickly categorizes a book.
Off-Page SEO: Expanding Your Book’s Reach
Off-page SEO is about getting your book into more libraries and having other books reference yours as a credible source.
For websites, this means:
Backlinks: Earning links from other reputable sites, much like citations in academic papers.
Social Signals: Promoting your site through social media platforms to build awareness and drive traffic.
Collaboration: Partnering with other artists or platforms to increase your visibility online.
The goal is to build trust and authority. When other sites recommend your website, search engines see it as a reliable resource, improving your rankings.
By mastering on-page, technical, and off-page SEO, you create a digital masterpiece—a website that is well-written, well-structured, and widely referenced, ensuring it gets seen by the right audience. Let’s make your website the next bestseller in search engines!
